John Gay
We are continuing to add photos from the John Gay collection to ViewFinder. Over 12,000 of his images can now be seen, making this the largest collection on ViewFinder, which now has over 60,000 images online.
This year's Chelsea Flower Show is taking place at the end of May. Our John Gay collection includes 60 images of the Chelsea Flower Show taken in the late 1950s and early '60s.
Railways and Rural Life
A new English Heritage Book 'Railways and Rural Life' by Gary Boyd-Hope and Andrew Sargent has recently been published, including photographs taken by Sydney W A Newton.
Sydney was fascinated by the building of Great Central Railway and took photos not only of the railway building work but, also the working of the navvies, and the rural life of the villages affected by the railway.
The Viewfinder site has over 3,000 photographs taken by Alfred Newton and Son (i.e. Sydney) from between 1890 and 1920. Although few of these images relate to the railway works, the collection includes many portraits of people and life at the turn of the 20th century, across many parts of England.
