Caption: Bleaching required large amounts of water to wash out the chemicals used to whiten the cloth. This waterwheel drove a beam pump which supplied the bleachworks with water from the River Irwell. The Irwell was a heavily industrialised river before 1810. This pump, now long derelict, probably dates from the early 19th century.
