Caption: One of the finest 18th-century town halls in the country, this civic building was constructed between 1749 and 1754 to the designs of John Wood the Elder. In 1789 to 1797 James Wyatt and John Foster made additions and reconstructions. The dome, surmounted by a figure of Britannia, was added in 1802 and the portico in 1811.
