Reference Number: NMR 23104/08
Caption: Although it is believed an estate existed on the site from the 12th century, Knole was transformed in 1456 by Thomas Bourchier, the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1603, the house was acquired by Thomas Sackville, a favourite of Elizabeth 1st. Sackville enlarged and embellished the house and it has since remained essentially unaltered.
